About This Game

Metroid Dread NSP ROM is an action-adventure game for Nintendo Switch. The Metroidvania genre has always been a strange one. Largely ignored by major publishers, yet almost as much explored by indie developers. Interestingly, the two games that helped define the genre and give it its name are so rarely played today that many casual gamers are unfamiliar with them.

Despite the success of the Netflix series, Castlevania hasn’t received a new game in seven years, and Metroid, aside from Federation Force, hasn’t released a new game in over a decade. While Metroid: Samus Returns was released in 2017, it offers a fresh gameplay experience with plenty of innovations compared to Metroid 2. But if that wasn’t enough, Metroid Dread is a true masterpiece: an entirely new Metroid game designed to conclude the five-part story that began with the original game in 1986.

That legacy shouldn’t deter anyone from playing, as narrative has never been Metroid’s strong suit. However, Metroid Dread, which attempts to wrap up the 35-year-long story arc, is a milestone for the series and, potentially, the genre as a whole. Given the lack of new Metroid games, expectations were uncertain. Those who fear a simplistic experience designed to appeal to a wider audience need not worry: Dread avoids that trap.

Metroid Dread features entirely 2D gameplay, but that doesn’t mean its graphics are dated or lack detail. The game features some 3D cutscenes, and the attention to visual detail is notable. Despite the Switch’s relatively modest resolution, the graphics make excellent use of light and shadow, with mostly harmless alien creatures and machines moving naturally in the background.
